1.) Disable IE11 Advanced Security Configuration (for users and administrators)
On Windows Servers, IE Enhanced Security Configuration (ESC) is enabled by default to minimize the risk of web browsing. This setting is stricter than on client systems such as Windows 10 and 11.
Steps:
1. Open Server Manager :
- Click Start and then click Server Manager .
2. Configure IE Enhanced Security Configuration :
- In Server Manager, select Local Server at the top left corner .
- Look for IE Enhanced Security Configuration and click the Enabled link.
- Disable Enhanced Security Configuration for Administrators and/or Users as required.
To manually adjust IE11's security settings to the Windows 10/11 default values:
1. Open Internet Options :
- Start IE11 and go to Tools (gear icon) → Internet Options .
2. Configure security zones :
- Switch to the Security tab .
- Set the zones (Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites) to the default values:
- Click on the respective zone and then on Default level . - The following default values are common
for the Internet
zone: - Downloading files: Enable
- Scripting: Enable
- ActiveX controls: Prompt or Disable
3. Adjust advanced settings :
- Switch to the Advanced tab and make sure the same options as in Windows 10/11 are enabled (e.g. TLS 1.2 if it is required).
3.) Apply Group Policies (GPO) (optional)
If you manage multiple servers, you can distribute security settings using Group Policy (GPO):
1. Open the Group Policy Editor (`gpedit.msc` or via Group Policy Management).
2. Navigate to User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Internet Explorer .
3. Set the appropriate security and privacy policies here.
4.) Consider alternatives to IE11
Since IE11 is outdated and no longer receives security updates, we recommend using modern browsers such as Microsoft Edge or another one that Windows Server supports. Microsoft Edge offers better security and functionality.
5.) Note:
- Disabling ESC or reducing security settings may make the system more vulnerable to attacks. Only do this if you can weigh the risk.
