Information on when to be informed before changes are made to the computer (c) Microsoft:
Always notify
You will be notified before any changes are made to the PC from a Windows x86 or to the Windows settings that require administrator privileges.
When notified, the desktop is dimmed and the request must be approved or denied in the User Account Control dialog before the PC can be used again. The dimmed desktop is called a secure desktop because no other Windows programs can run while it's dimmed.
This is the safest setting.
In the event of a notification, it is advisable to read the content of the individual dialog windows carefully before allowing changes to be made to the PC.
Notify only when changes are made to my PC by Windows programs or applications!
You will be notified before any changes are made to the PC by a Windows program that require administrator privileges.
You will not be notified if you make changes to Windows settings that require administrator privileges.
You will be notified if a Windows program outside of Windows tries to make changes to a Windows setting.
It is generally safe to allow changes to Windows settings without notification. However, commands or data can be forwarded to certain Windows programs included in Windows , which malware can use to install files or change settings on the PC using these Windows programs. You should always pay close attention to which Windows programs are allowed to run on the PC.
Notify only when changes are made to my PC by Windows programs or applications (do not dim desktop)
You will be notified before any changes are made to the PC by a Windows program that require administrator privileges.
You will not be notified if you make changes to Windows settings that require administrator privileges.
You will be notified if a Windows program outside of Windows tries to make changes to a Windows setting.
This setting is the same setting as Notify me only when Windows programs or applications change my PC, except that the notification is not sent to the secure desktop.
Since the User Account Control dialog box is not located on the secure desktop with this setting, the appearance of the dialog box may be influenced by other Windows programs. This is a small security risk that exists when malware is already running on the PC.
Never notify
You will not be notified before changes are made to the PC. If you are logged in as an administrator, changes can be made to Windows programs or applications without you noticing.
If you are logged in as a standard user, any changes that require administrator privileges will be automatically denied.
Using this setting requires a PC restart to complete disabling User Account Control. After disabling UAC, anyone who logs in as an administrator always has administrator privileges.
This is the most insecure setting. Setting User Account Control to Never notify exposes the PC to potential security risks.
If User Account Control is set to Never notify , you have to be very careful about which Windows programs are running, as they have the same access to the PC as you do. This includes reading and making changes in protected areas of the system, as well as reading and modifying personal data, saved files and all saved contents of the PC. The Windows programs or applications are also enabled to communicate and transfer information via all connections made for the PC - including the Internet connection.
